Qualification required for admission

Generally, for access to an official doctoral program will have to be in possession of the official Spanish Degree, or equivalent, and Master's Degree.

Therefore, for admission to this program is required to have one of the two following qualifications:

  • Official master's degree (program approved by the National Assessment and Spanish Accreditation  - ANECA ) or a foreign master's title considered equivalent by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program (CAPD).
  • Engineering, Architecture or BA curriculum of at least 5 years, according to systems that are previous to the Royal Decree 1393/2007 in Spain.

Generally, applicants admitted to the Program must make a consistent stage of research training courses and seminars for a total of 30 ECTS (equivalent to half a year full time).

Applicants who have completed 30 ECTS Master of investigation to another officer of the UPM, may be fully or partially exempt from the above requirement, depending on the adequacy of its training profile to the objectives of the training period.

Particularly,  to access this PhD program is recommended to pursue the path researcher Master's Degree in Civil Engineering Systems offered by the UPM. In this case the student may be admitted directly to doctoral research stage which consists essentially in preparing a doctoral thesis.

Likewise, those in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA), according to RD 778/1998 or sufficient research had been reached by previous regulations, may be admitted directly to doctoral research stage, depending on the adequacy of their profile to the research program.

Documentation needed to apply form admission

To apply for admission must take place in the period pre qualified to do so by the UPM, through the website of the UPM.

The procedure and deadlines for applying for admission are the commons of the UPM, which are available on their website. The request must provide personal and academic data and provide in electronic format (PDF) the following documents:

  • D.N.I., passport or N.I.E.
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation written and signed by the student, indicating the research line on which he/she wants to work and the commitment to the completion of the doctoral thesis.
  • Letter (s) of recommendation. The letter must express the commitment to supervise the doctoral thesis by a professor of the Research Group to which the selected research line belongs and wherein the student will carry out his/her research.
  • Higher Certificate or proof of your request
  • Student record
  • Master degree or proof of your request. Students who hold the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) must provide the supporting documents.
  • Master's student record.

For students with foreign qualifications from outside the European, not approved certificate must be attached with the number of hours studied.

It is noted that, for admission to this doctoral program will be needed in any case the documents 3 and 4 listed above.

In cases where the applicant has not sufficiently defined the research line on which to perform the thesis, it is highly recommended to pursue, within his/her itinerary studies, the Master in Civil Engineering Systems research. Through this way, he/her can get a Master's degree and then apply for the doctoral program's admission in his/her researcher period (Doctoral Thesis). This allows you to gain insight into the research offered in the program, which will give you the choice of topic for the dissertation.

Assessment of merit criteria for admission

Admission to the Ph.D. is limited by the leadership of theses in the research program by the teachers concerned. In any case, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program (CAPD) the following specific criteria apply for assessment of merit to evalute the admission:

  • The formation process of a second cycle degree with a strong presence of the subject areas included in the Master in Civil Engineering Systems will be positively valued.
  • The ability to assimilate the lessons of the program, accredited by a good academic record will be positively valued.
  • The time availability for the effective use of the academic programe will be positively valued
  • The obtaining of grants that enable full-time learning and research will be high positively valued.
  • The accreditation of English language skills that allow access to scientific literature and the spread of the scientific results will be high positively valued.
